The days are gone when camera phones used to have a single camera. Nowadays latest camera phones are designed with multiple cameras of various

  • Wide angle
  • Ultra wide angle
  • Telephoto
  • Periscope
  • Monochrome
  • Macro
  • TOF/ Depth.

With multiple types of cameras, mobile phones can capture clear and realistic photos. They also have different features to filter your photos. Modern technology has proven that a phone can have one or more cameras.  Recent mobile phones are now being launched with more cameras. Mobile phones with multiple cameras are now trending.  These seven types of cameras are different from each other and each of them has a different quality.

Wide angle:

Wide angle cameras are the most common types of camera used in smartphones.  From the time of single rear cameras, mobile phones camera used to have a wide angled lens. Nowadays the primary camera in mobile phones with best specs is the wide angle camera. And many of the selfie cameras also have a wide angled lens.

Wide angle cameras of mobile phone’s focal length  ranges between 22mm and 30mm.  The short focal length can give the camera a wide angle-of-view,

The wide-angle camera is good to  capture landscapes, group shots, or any other instance where you may want to capture more scenes.

Ultra wide angle:

The ultra-wide-angle camera is known to have  wider angle-of-view than the standard wide-angle lens.
But the ultra wide angle camera is not as known to everyone or is not as much common as the wide angle camera.

Some mobile phones are designed with a dual camera that faces the front with an ultra-wide-angle camera which is used as a secondary selfie camera next to the front wide-angle. That can allow you for taking selfies including more scenery in the frame.

The focal of an ultra-wide-angle phone camera ranges between 12mm to 18mm. Ultra wide angle camera can give you an angle-of-view of up to about 120-degrees.

The downside of ultra wide angle lenses
captures the more distorted photos that can look around the edges with its wider angle.Ultra wide angle camera can  create a bulging effect which is known as a fisheye.

Telephoto:

The telephoto camera on a mobile phone can have longer focal length than the wide-angle camera or can be two or three times longer than the focal length of the wide-angle camera. The telephoto can give a mobile camera the 2x or 3x “optical zoom” factor.

The telephoto camera on a phone has a focal length between 50mm to 85mm.  if the primary camera can have a 26mm lens and the telephoto camera can have a 52mm lens and the optical zoom factor can be 2x.

Because telephoto lenses are known to have a longer focal length than wide-angle lenses, they can have a narrower angle of view. This can make the telephoto camera ideal to capture portraits.

Periscope:

Telephoto lenses on smartphone cameras are known to be limited to a low zoom factor because of its size but the periscope camera on a mobile phone has a focal length of less or more than 105mm to 130mm. Phones designed with periscope camera often can boast optical zoom factors up to 10x.
More than 3x optical zoom can create a big bulge at the back and phones with big bulge are not preferable. To zoom more than 3x without bulge now an old technology is being followed which can use folded optics similar to those of a submarine periscope for capturing an image. A prism can reflect light which can enter the camera to direct it to the sensor, that is been positioned on its side.

Monochrome:

An RGB (red, green, blue) colour filter array (CFA) is located on top of the sensor in order to produce colour photos. Without a CFA filter, the camera captures black and white photos because a sensor on its own only can detect light intensity, not colour.

Monochrome sensors without a CFA is used for capturing more light in low-light conditions. This can results in images with sharpness and high contrast. Most mobile phones with monochrome sensors use computational photography for combining images from other sensors with a CFA for improving their overall appearance.

The downside of the colour filter array absorbs light waves that can match the colour of the filter and can reflect the rest. You may capture true black and white photos with the monochrome sensor using a digital black and white filter.

Macro:

A macro lens allows you to take close-up photos where you need to capture small details of the subject. A mobile phone with macro camera can differ from the telephoto and periscope cameras because it can’t zoom in on a distant subject, it can magnify subjects which are closer to the camera like a magnifying glass.

There are more mobile macro photographers out there than the amount of phones which have macro cameras, particularly high-end flagship smartphones. Macro cameras on mobile phones can be found on mid-range devices. Macro camera has drawback of having not more than 5 MP which made
many to believe that the macro camera on phones is not useful. But It can’t not be entirely true because a camera may not need tons of megapixels to take good photos.

Tof/Depth:

A ToF (time of flight) camera which is also known as a depth sensor, is not the camera that is used to capture photos.

The ToF or depth camera collects data to use in computational photography which have a low resolution of 2MP or less than that.

The ToF camera creates a three-dimensional map, or depth map, of a scene which can be done by shooting out a laser and calculating the time it can take for it for bouncing off a surface and can reflect back to the camera. This information can be used for analysing what is closer to the camera and what is in the background.

While taking portrait shots background information gathered by the depth sensor is used for creating artificial effects like the blurred background that can separate the subject from the background. This camera also can provide information for AR (augmented reality) applications.

Bottom line:

Mobile Phone manufacturer decide which camera should be includes in their devices, keeping the budget and the space of the device in mind. Mobile phones which have multiple cameras can open up more opportunities to explore creative mobile photography.
